Why Separation Is an Illusion - The Story of The Proud Wave
If you’ve watched the news this week, for the first in a while, it hasn’t been just about the virus.
It’s been about the murder of a black man by a white policeman - a racist attack.
Racism is of course wrong. I’ve experienced it myself. But what is at the root cause of this violence, and all violence motivated in such ways? What’s the one insight that you not only end this kind of violence but all forms of discrimination, suffering and deep unhappiness?
I think it’s a false sense of separation. Not just the separation of race, religion, nationality, sexual orientation and so on - but the fundamental separation between that little thing you love calling ‘me’ and the world around you.
To explain this, I'd like to share with you a story about a wave.
Once upon a time, there was a wave in the ocean. It was born and started off very small, but gradually rose from the ocean. But it didn't know that it was separate from the ocean - it was just a wave in the ocean and was just rising up. The little wave was at one with the ocean, and lived in peace.
Then one day it looked in the mirror and said "Wow, I'm a wave! I look like this, I'm this shape, this colour, I like doing this, and I don't like doing that!"
It thought that it existed separate from the ocean. It grew larger and larger - it became a proud wave. And it thought it looked really good. The proud wave tried to adjust its hairstyle and be the right shade of blue to look good.
After some time, this proud wave started to notice the other waves around it. Some of them were quite small and weren't very impressive. But other waves were amazing - they were beautiful and seemed to have everything organized. It was really impressive what they were doing. As this wave got larger and larger, it got angry at other waves that got in the way. Some of the waves grouped up together depending on what colour they were and hung out with each other. And other waves were not so large and lucky, and were discriminated against.
Eventually, this wave met a very wise wave. The wise wave told him "You're not separate from the ocean".
The proud wave asked, "What do you mean?"
You're not this separate, individual wave. You’re part of the ocean.
“You know that's not really, very practical, I'm a wave here and I'm trying to survive in this huge ocean. I need to thrive and I need to make sure that I'm good enough, and I look good, and I need to kill those other waves so there’s more peace and justice in the ocean!”
No, no, no! We're just waves, just rising out of the ocean and eventually we all go back to the ocean.
You are not just a wave in an ocean. You’re the ocean in the wave.
And so this wave said "Oh, how do I do that? How do I become the ocean? What ways, what practices do I need to do, what exercise can I do to realize this?"
The wise wave, said "There's no need to do anything, you already are the ocean. You just need to look around and see that obvious fact. Just like you're the ocean in the wave so all these other waves in the ocean are also oceans in the wave. They come from the ocean and they go back to the ocean."
First of all - we are all the ocean. You can call that ocean whatever you like - energy, matter, God, love, consciouness, universe. Different words for the same thing.. We're all going to go back to it - that's what's gonna happen. It's just a game that's being played. You may have this sense of controlling things.
But actually, it's all happening to you, it's all the ocean at play - energy at play.
So that's the story of the little proud wave that's thought it was separate. And one day it realized it's not just a wave in the ocean but it's also the ocean in the wave.
Did this story make any sense to you?
If not, no worries. I’m going to be sending you some other stories and easy ways to make this giant realisation - you are not separate. Why? Because I believe it’s one of the biggest ways for transformation in your life that you’ll ever come across. Big promise, I know.
But let’s see…till next week…stay safe out there.
