Discovering the Root Meaning of Curiosity
Curious.
I love being curious. And today, in our daily mindfulness class, we got curious about the word ‘curious’!
So I looked up the root meaning of it, and guess what?
The root meaning of curious comes from cura meaning to care.
Care and curiosity go hand in hand. When we are curious about our surroundings, we discover something new.
And when we can be curious about our thoughts and feelings rather than just running or fighting them, they lose their power over us.
Why?
Because curiosity is the first step to caring. And the warm-hearted power of care, heals.
Interestingly, even the word ‘heal’ means to make whole.
So I encourage you to be curious - especially be curious about difficult feelings like anxiety, sadness or shame. Be interested to learn about them and explore them within the body as present moment sensations that come and go.
Understand that they are there to show you what you care about.
Because, we hurt where we care.
The flip side of our pain is where we discover our purpose.
I’ll leave you with a guided meditation from this morning’s Daily Mindfulness Club for you to listen to now - try it for a minute or two, and longer when you have time.
