What's Your One Word?

A new month is a great opportunity to set intentions

Happy September!

Last week I celebrated my birthday and it’s been a nice time to reflect on what I wish to focus on in the coming year.

At these milestone moments, I sometimes ask myself:

‘What do I wish to cultivate in the coming year, in just one word?’

As I reflected, with all the challenges of the last two years, it has been easy to drift apart from some friends and other communities too. Feelings of disconnection can arise.

So, my intention in the coming year in one word is: Connection!

What do I mean by that? Well, I love community. So I will continue to connect each morning live or via recordings in the daily mindfulness club, which continues to be a highlight of my day - both connecting with myself and others. And I hope to nurture a new community for mindful practitioners to help spread the message of mindfulness, ACT and more. Beyond my mindful work, I intend to make plans to connect with creativity, nature, and friends, old and new.

How to Come Up with Your One Word

What about you? If you were to ask yourself that question, what one word would come to your mind? Not sure? Consider this: If a wise, kind person was giving you some friendly tips, what would they recommend for you to focus on, in one word or perhaps one sentence?

Once you’ve come up with your word or sentence, think about how you can turn that idea into action in small ways. Your mind may have a tendency to think too big, and then end up giving up. Instead, think small is beautiful and begin taking tiny actions in the direction of your chosen intention. A seed only needs a few drops of water each day to germinate - not a whole bucket of water!

If you’re not sure, then your one word can be ‘reflection’, and perhaps you can spend a little time everyday reflecting on what you wish to cultivate in the coming month or months ahead. And if your answer is nothing, and you’re happy with that, that’s fine too - it’s up to you.
