3 Tips to Help You Value the Little Moments in Your Life

As some of you know, I’m a big fan of Kaizen - the power of small change.

And if you think about it, mindfulness is about a very small thing - a moment.

And how long is a moment? It’s not even a split second.

A moment is so short, it’s not measurable.

And yet, our lives are made up of these moments.

This shows that small moments matter a lot. They are everything.

Our whole lives are made of small moments.

And so if we are to live full and meaningful lives, we need to value the small and seemingly insignificant moments.

A mindful breath. A cloud in the sky. A glance at a houseplant. The taste of water.

If we can learn to value these little moments, our whole lives become more meaningful.

And if we ignore these small moments in search of some big and significant moment, we may find our lives feeling empty and void of meaning.

How many times have we heard stories of celebrities and extremely wealthy people feeling tremendously sad, empty and overwhelmed with addictions? 

They chased the big goals without taking a moment to reflect on their values.

If we chase big goals and big dreams and forget to stop and think about our values, that emptiness will always be there.

If we can take some time to think about what deeply matters to us, and bring a flavour of that meaning into the little moments of our day, everything changes.

A glance at the sky reminds you of your value of nature. 

A sip of water reminds you of your value of health. 

A walk with a friend reminds you of your value of connection. 

Praising a colleague reminds you of how much you value kindness.

Here’s 3 tips to connect more deeply with the little moments:

  1. Learn to value the small moments. Whenever you feel a pang of boredom, sadness or anxiety, instead of reaching for your phone, take a moment to connect with the present moment and take a mindful breath. Start to value little, seemingly insignificant moments. Be with the moment and remind yourself that this moment matters.

  2. Meditate daily. Taking time to meditate, even if it’s just a few minutes, will increase your mindful awareness and help you to spot and enjoy mindful moments throughout the day. If you’re struggling to motivate yourself, try joining our club or other community.

  3. Think Kaizen. When you want to make a change in your life, consider thinking of really tiny steps you could make rather than big leaps. Kaizen philosophy can change your whole life. Here’s some nice books on the subject.
