Getting Started: Simple Techniques for Beginners
Embarking on your mindfulness meditation journey is easier than you might think. Here are some simple techniques to get you started:
1. Find a Quiet Space to Meditate
As a beginner, it’s best to find a quiet space to first try out mindfulness meditaiton.
Choose a calm, quiet location where you can sit or lie comfortably without being disturbed.
This can be a space in your home, a quiet corner in a park, or even a cozy nook in your office.
2. Choose a Comfortable Posture to Meditate in
Sit in a comfortable position. You can sit on a cushion or a chair, or even lie down if that's more comfortable for you. The key is to find a posture that helps you stay alert and focused, yet comfortable.
3. Focus on Your Body
Notice what your body feels like as it sits or lies here. Become aware of any areas of tension or tightness. Adjust your posture to make you more comfortable if you can. Stretch any parts of your body that you wish. I recommend stretching your jaw, forehead, shoulders, back, hands, legs and feet.
4. Focus on Your Breath
Gently close your eyes and bring your attention to your breath. Notice the sensation of the air entering your nostrils and filling your lungs. As you exhale, feel the air leaving your body. Let your breath is a natural anchor for your attention.
Breathing through your nose releases nitric oxide, which helps absorb the oxygen into your body. So do breathe through your nose if you can. If you can’t, take a moment to clear your nose.
4. Observe Your Thoughts
As you focus on your breath, you'll notice that thoughts will naturally arise. Instead of getting caught up in them or trying to suppress them, simply observe them as they come and go, like clouds in the sky.
Remember to maintain an attitude of curiosity and kindness (non-judgment or at least less judgement).
5. Practice Regularly
Consistency is key in mindfulness meditation as well as everything else!
Aim to practice daily, even if it's just for a minute or two. Let it grow naturally from there. Over time, you'll begin to notice the benefits in your everyday life.
And even if you only want to meditate for a minute a day, that’s fine. Do what works for you. I think a minute is great!
