3 Ways to Mindfully Find the Peaceful Eye in the Storm of Your Life

We were talking about storms in our Daily Mindfulness Club recently.

One of our members used to live in the Gulf Coast, and she shared how she loved the storms as a child.

Her parents wouldn’t be able to go to work, and so they’d be able to have fun together, sing songs and play games. They had their parents all to themselves.

And they even got to experience the eye of the storm!

One moment it’s stormy…and then suddenly a calm would come. They had entered the eye.

And then, gradually, a few leaves would start moving. And then she knew the eye of the storm was passing.

Our negative thoughts, difficult feelings and painful sensations can feel like a storm, ripping through us.

How can we find peace within ourselves, like the peace within the eye of a storm.

Here’s three ways to find your inner peace:

Plant seeds of peace each day

This one’s obvious, but we all need the regular reminders. If you spend a few minutes or more meditating or doing some other kind of contemplative practice, you’re planting the seed of peace within you. Then, when the storm comes along, you’ll have the necessary skills to turn inwards and find that peace you so long for. If you’re struggling to motivate yourself, join a mindful community to help support you. Hmmm, I wonder who offers that?!

Slow down even when your mind says ‘I don’t have time to stop!’

You are not just your mind, my friend. Your mind says all sort of things, some of which is total crap! It’s just not true. So rather than listening to the commands of your mind, listen to your heart. What does your intuition say is the best way to deal with this storm you’re facing? Maybe that’s the voice you need to listen to. Ask yourself: ‘What does my intuition say is the best thing to do right now?’

Physically slow down to mentally slow down

Whenever I notice myself rushing to get to a meeting, I consciously slow down. I’ve had too many experiences of rushing, only to find out the meeting is delayed, or that I end up forgetting something, making more mistakes and taking even longer. When you’re experiencing an inner storm, the urge can be to rush, rush, rush. Bad idea. Slow down to speed up.
